Best Buttermilk Cookie Recipe

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts(optional)
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Mix sugar and shortening. Add vanilla and eggs. Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Add baking powder to the flour. Add the flour and liquid alternately. Add nuts if desired. Store in refrigerator overnight. Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees F. for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Don’t over bake.

Frost with caramel frosting.

Caramel Frosting

Melt 1/4 cup butter. Add 1 Cup brown sugar. Boil for one minute. Cool and add 1/4 cup evaporated milk and cream until smooth. Beat in powdered sugar until it is the right consistency to spread.

Orange and Date Buttermilk Cookie Recipe

3/4 cup margarine
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cup light brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. soda
1/4 cup orange juice
grated orange peel
1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Cream margarine and butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix until light and fluffy. Add arange juice, rind, vanilla and buttermilk. Mix dry ingredients together and add to mixture. Lastly add dates and nuts. Drop by teaspoon on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees F. for 8 to 10 minutes.

When cool frost with orange frosting.

Orange Frosting

Mix 1/4 cup butter with a little cream and/or orange juice and beat in enough powdered sugar to make frosting the right consistency for spreading. Add a drop or so of orange extract.

Sarah’s Buttermilk Cookie Recipe

  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp. nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 6 cups flour, sifted

Put soda in buttermilk and set aside. Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until light and creamy. Add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk. Mix well. Drop by teaspoonful on greased cookie sheet. Dust with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Buttermilk Sugar Cookies

  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cooking oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 6 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla

Dissolve soda in buttermilk and set aside. Cream sugar and oil and add eggs. Mix baking powder and flour and add to cream mixture alternatley with buttermilk. Mix well. On a floured cookie sheet (not greased) drop by tablespoon. Sprinkle tops with sugar and bake at 450 degrees F. for 5-6 minutes. Flour cookie sheet each time.

Buttermilk Sugar Cookies

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Cream shortening and sugar and add eggs and vanilla. Sift together the dry ingredients and add with buttermilk. Drop by spoonful on greased cookiet sheet. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 400 degrees F. for about 8 to 10 minutes. Don’t over bake and don’t let them turn brown.
