A Message about the First Grade Word List

While this list is titled as the First Grade Word List, the title is just a reference to give you an idea of where to begin with your child.

However, if your child is in a higher grade and having difficulties with their reading or fluency rates, this list could be a good place to start.

Make the flashcards, and after trying some of the activities, try to notice if there are certain words your child has difficulty pronouncing.

Also, make sure they understand what the words mean. It could be they are having trouble with comprehension because they don’t understand what they are reading about.

Teachers use standard word lists to make flashcards for students to use to increase their reading rate and fluency.

They are also known as sight words because they are the most commonly used words. When a child can recognize them as they are reading, and not to sound them out, their reading rate and fluency will improve.

The list on this page is the one for first grade. This is also a good list to start with if your child could benefit from increasing their fluency or reading rate.
