About surfing in Puerto Rico

In recent decades, the convenience and effectiveness of air travel have made it possible for surfers to travel the world over in search for that elusive perfect wave. All who have come to Puerto Rico agree the Island offers the best surfing in the entire Atlantic region. The Island’s waters remain fairly warm all year long and allow those accustomed to cooler latitudes to shed unnecessary wet suits.

Puerto Rico’s location in the Caribbean place it in or around the path of almost every major storm system that develops off the coast of Africa every summer, during hurricane season. Even though most storms head north of the Island, they come close enough to generate good surfing waves in the slow summer months.

The Caribbean coast also serves up good hollow waves in the summertime. Still, the arrival of fall signals the coming of the real surfing season on the Island.

Surfers come from all over the world to carve their moves on northwestern surfing breaks. Rincón, for example, is often featured in surfing magazines all around the globe and has earned the reputation of being the wave “powerhouse of the Atlantic.” And not without reason, Tres Palmas in Rincón offers some of the largest surfable waves this side of the Hawaiian Islands.
