About the Howell Mountain Vineyards

Beatty Ranch Vineyard and Black Sears Vineyard combined their fruit and talent in the early nineties to form Howell Mountain Vineyards. Since their inception, they have been producing very good wine as well as extraordinary fruit for other wineries’ “vineyard designate” wines.


The wines that Howell Mountain Vineyards produces are categorized as ultra premium. Their vineyards are planted with Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon; both varietals thrive in their microclimate. Zinfandels: Black Sears Zinfandel, Beatty Ranch Zinfandel and Old Vine Zinfandel. Cabernet Sauvignons: Black Sears Ranch Cab, Beatty Ranch Cab, Cabernet Sauvignon and MTV Cab.


Howell Mountain Vineyards includes two very prestigious vineyards; Black Sears Vineyard and Beatty Ranch. Founders Jerre Sears, Joyce Black Sears and Mike Beatty decided to start producing wine under the Howell Mountain Vineyard label in 1988.


The fruit from Howell Mountain Vineyards is known to be some of the best from Napa Valley. Before they began producing wine, the two vineyards sold their fruit to several prestigious wineries, including; Cornerstone, Turley, Duckhorn, Dunn Vineyards and Elyse.

About the Howell Mountain Vineyards

Mike Beatty is the manager of vineyard operations. With a family history of farming and an undergraduate degree from Stanford, Beatty is a large part of Howell Mountain Vineyards’ success. Over his 25 years in viticulture, Beatty has grown everything from Old Vine Zinfandel to immature Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beatty Ranch Vineyard is located 1,800 feet above the valley floor. The vineyard was planted with Zinfandel over 90 years ago, and produces some of the best Zinfandel fruit in the valley. Black Sears Vineyard also produces fruit for award winning wines. At 2,400 feet, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Howell Mountain AVA.


Ted Lemon began working as head winemaker for Howell Mountain Vineyards 1994. Before that, Lemon was the first American to be the winemaker for a Burgundian Estate: Domaine Guy Roulot. Mr. Lemon received his degree in enology from the prestigious French university, Universite de Dijon in 1981. He is an integral member on the Howell Mountain team, plays a huge role in the quality of the wine that they produce.
