ADD and Speed Reading

ADD The acronym ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. Essentially, a person is unable to focus and concentrate on a task for long periods. They might be listening to a presentation at work and lose their interest.

Children with ADD may be listening to their teacher explaining the homework for the next day and they will start daydreaming.

These people love to move from one thing to the next, quickly. They have the capacity to handle multiple tasks at a time.

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. In addition to losing focus, these individuals find it hard to sit still.

They make great emergency room personnel. They can work 12 hour shifts, collapse, and then start all over again in a few hours.

Research has shown that people with ADD/ADHD are better able to Speed Read.They take in whole words or whole groups of words at a time. They are usually the students who are considered “visual learners.” They first see the whole word or sentence. This is the basis of many new learning techniques, including speed reading.

Diversity and Environment

In children and adults this “disorder” is considered a disability. Perhaps in the wrong environment it is a disability. However, this is not true when it comes to Speed Reading. The constant stimulation of the Brain as the reader moves over the pages with great speed takes over the slow decoding process we are traditionally taught in school.

Two Hemispheres – Left and Right
Traditional reading is a left-brain activity. Speed Reading is a right-brain activity. Children and Adults with ADD are usually right brained.

ADD and Speed Reading

The right hemisphere of the brain best handles concepts of wholeness, patterns, recognition, visual imagery, space, music, rhythm, and processing ideas at the same time, in a parallel fashion.

This hemisphere of the brain deals with numbers, language, and analytical thought. It processes ideas in a sequential manner, or step-by-step.

Speed Readers use the side of the brain that uses pictures and processes information at a faster rate. This leaves the step-by-step process behind for the ease of rapid visual understanding and comprehension.

Speed Reading focuses on the visual, intuitive skills we all have and perhaps never notice. Speed Reading emphasizes the visual and teaches you to look at whole words or paragraph. It develops visual skills.

Natural Speed Readers
This is why people with ADD make the best Speed Readers. They use the right side of the brain for most things. They are the natural Speed Readers. They often average 3,000-8,000 words per minute.
