Bekri meze (or o mezes toy bekri) means the drunkard´s appetizer. How the dish got this name I have no idea!

Traditionally, it´s made with a mixture of meats: Lever and kidney´s from lamb or goat, pork and/or beef.

In a addition to a approximately half a kilo meat (one pound) you´ll need:

  • One thick slice kefalotyri or other hard cheese, for instance Parmesan
  • One onion
  • Juice from one lemon
  • 200 ml (one cup) dry red wine
  • Thyme, oregano
  • Salt, pepper
  • Oil for fryingCut the meat in small pieces, slice the onion and fry in the oil a small pan or pot. Let get some color. Cut the cheese in cubes and put on top. Add the lemon juice, the wine, the spices and herbs and let simmer for about 20 minutes.First time I tasted this mezedaki was in Volos, a city which is know for its tsipouradakia, small restaurants where they specialize in meze, Greek appetizers and tsipouro, a Greek drink that resembles ouzo.
