Best Loved Beef Stew and Dumplings

If you want a really delicious meal, try Beef Stew and Dumplings. It’s so easy to make and clean up is easy because you only need one pot for a complete meal.

There really is no need for any side dishes with beef stewe and dumplings because the recipe is complete on its own. Of coursse you can make the stew without the dumplings if you prefer.

I’ll provide the stew recipe in this portion of the page and put the dumplings portion under the side dishes below. That way you can choose whether you want to make the full beef stew and dumplings recipe or leave the dumplings out.

Here’s the stew portion of the recipe. The dumplings portion follows.

4 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 lbs. stewing beef, cut in bite-size pieces
2 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 bay leaf
4 cups beef broth
1 large onion, chopped
1 1/2 cups chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 1/4 cups sliced mushrooms
1 cup frozen peas
1 cup whole kernel corn
3 tbsp. cornstarch
1/2 cup cold water

Method

Mix flour, salt and pepper on a plate. Roll beef cubes in flour mixture to coat. In a large pot heat butter and oil. Add bay leaf. Add beef and cook until brown on all sides, turning occasionally. Add beef broth, onion, carrots, celery and mushrooms. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add peas and corn. Return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 more minutes. Remove bay leaf.

In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water until smooth. Gradually add to bubbling liquid in pot to thicken slightly. Continue to cook for 2 miutes, stirring almost constantly.

Beef Stew and Dumplings Side Dishes

Here’s how you make the dumplings. They are really easy to make and are a great addition to the stew.

Dumplings for Beef Stew and Dumplings

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
4 tsp. baking powder
3 tbsp. melted butter
1 cup milk

Method

In a bowl, mix dry ingredients. Stir in butter and milk until dry ingredients are just moistened. Drop the batter from a spoon into the boiling broth of the stew. Cover tightly and simmer for 18 mintes. Do not open the lid or the dumplings will be heavy.

Serve immediately.


When we have beef stew and dumplings I often make an old fashioned bread pudding to have as a dessert. I’m including that recipe here so you can try it too if you’d like.

Old Fashioned Bread Pudding

2 cups milk
4 cups torn, stale bread
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup raisins

Method

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat the milk so it is warm, not hot. Place the bread in a bowl and pour the milk over the bread. Add the sugar, salt, cinnamon, eggs and raisins. Stir well. Pour mixture into an 8″ greased baking dish. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until mixture is set. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream. Makes 6 large servings.
