Can I use homemade cornice boards?

by Kitten

Help!! Can I use homemade cornice boards, to help with the lengthen of my curtains? I don’t see any one doing this, but I would think if my painted cornice was long enough and I put my valance at the bottom of cornice, or even right over it,

I could then add my curtains rods even lower?? there by lengthening curtain panels. I own 160 year old home, with really long windows and we just can’t pay the price there asking for Longer curtain/drapery panels for my 8 windows

Thank you with all of my heart signed Kitten363

Can I use homemade cornice boards?

Hi Kitten

Yes you can do this up to a point. I have done this a few times myself.

The only things to watch out for are the depth of the cornice/valance. make it too deep and it will start to look odd. The longer your curtains the deeper you can make it.

Then how much more you move the curtain rod down is a matter of not seeing the curtain heading. Well not seeing it from most of the room. If your right next to the window and look up obviously you will see it.

also if sitting on a sofa and looking up you might see the curtain heading.

As to putting your valance over your painted cornice board. Yes you can do this, if it’s got a pleated heading. You simply have to staple it up between the pleats.

I personally have not fitted a valance part way down a cornice board. You will need to just try and see how it look. If you like it then it’s fine.

Hope that helps you make your mind up on which way to go.

Best regards
