In Childrens Quilt Books I will be reviewing quilt books that are for kids. These books include quilts you would make for a child and quilt projects they would learn to make themselves. The books are listed alphabetically by title.
Calendar Kid’s Hand Print Quilt Through the Year
Marcia L. Layton
This book shows you how to make cute quilts using painted hand prints for the basic design. These designs include: kites, umbrellas, strawberries, ducks, flamingos, undersea fantasy, spiders, etc. The projects are good for adults and children to work on together.

Fast Patch Kid’s Quilts
Anita Hallock & Betsy Hollack Heath
This book has many projects that are easy and quick to make. These projects are made using simple square and triangle blocks. Most of the blocks in the quilt are based on the nine patch block, with solid squares and half square triangles. An example of some of the quilts in the book are: a two color checkerboard quilt, a boat quilt made from triangles, a butterfly quilt, a flower quilt, and an angel quilt. These quilts are not only nice quilts for kids, but the authors also give ideas of ways kids can help you with these quilts.
Polka Dot Kid’s Quilts
Jean Van Bocket
This book, as is true with many childrens quilt books, is a very easy book that combines piecing and applique. It has very cute patterns that can be used for baby and children’s quilts. The book includes patterns for a pillow, pillowcases, doll quilts and wall hangings. One of my favorite quilts is “Pocket Quilt”. This quilt is made with pockets to store items in, such as crayons, notepads, little cars, treats, etc. It is a quilt that is just the right size for taking in the car, or on a trip.
The applique patterns can be used for the quilts in this book or for quilts you create. It gives excellent general directions, including three different methods of applique
Quilts for Kids to Love
Kathy Wesley
There are twenty-seven quilts using ten easy to sew patterns. Most of the quilts are your basic quilt patterns, but with some unusual additions. The quilts range from beginner quilts to ones that take a little more experience, but none are very hard.
Sunbonnet Sue’s Neighborhood
Quilts Made Easy
This book has a variety of Sunbonnet Sues. They include Fisherman Fred, Windblown Sue, Overall Sam, rag dolls (both a boy and a girl), Indian Girl, and Umbrella girl.
Sunbonnet Sue Visits Quilt in a Day
Eleanor Burns
Eleanor Burns shows you an easy method for making the traditional Sunbonnet Sue and Suspender Sam blocks. Her directions are for machine piecing, appliquing(using fusible webbing) and quilting. However, I have made this quilt several times by hand rather than machine. It was very easy to do. This is one of my favorite quilt books.
Teach Me to Quilt
Leisure Art, Inc.
Teach Me to Quilt is different from many other childrens quilt books because it is written for kids. It has easy to understand instructions with a lot of colorful illustrations. Some of the projects include: a sewing caddie, floor pillow cover, pillow with photo transfer, quilt as you go tote bag, pillow toppers, “Trip Around the World” throw made with six inch patchwork blocks and pinwheel throw.
The Ultimate Sunbonnet Sue Collection
Leisure Arts, Inc.
This collection includes twenty four blocks that add variety to the traditional Sunbonnet Sue quilts. This book briefly covers instructions for machine and hand applique. Since the instructions are brief I feel you would need previous experience in machine quilting. This book would be one that you would use for the cute patterns rather than a “how to” book.
If you are looking for an idea for a kid’s quilt or ways to teach children to quilt. I hope these review of children’s quilt books have been helpful.
