Choosing & Using Art Paper

Every artist, amateur and professional, uses art paper of one sort or another. Whether you like pencil sketching, pastels or use acrylics or oils, there is a range of papers to suit your needs.

As ever though, the range available is daunting. Just consider a few examples…

Choosing & Using Art Paper

You may use a heavy cartridge paper with a pronounced ‘tooth’ for a pencil portrait. It could be a lightweight spiral pad to get down a quick tonal sketch for a watercolor. Perhaps it’s tinted Ingres paper for pastel work. Or maybe its one of the papers developed to paint on with oils or acrylics.

Many art papers can be used with more than one medium – and at times more than one medium on the same sheet, like pastels worked over a watercolor base (mixed media).
