What is a VPN connection?

VPN connection means Virtual Private Network connection. Such connection is an own, secured data network which will be used to connect one private network to another private network over the internet.

This connection is often used to let employees connect at home to the network of their company so they can work at home and still use the facilities at work. such a connection makes usage of encryption techniques or tunneling protocols so the data which is send over this connection can not be examined by anyone. There is also authentication being used to be sure that anyone who uses this connection has the right privileges to use this connection.

If you want to connect to the network at the office, the office has to be prepared the network and the servers to set up such connection and you need the right privileges to set up this connection with your company. If all this is set up you can set up this connection.

How to set up a VPN connection in Windows XP?
To help you setting up this connection you just follow the next steps below and it shouldn’t be a problem.

Step 1:
Click Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

Step 2:
In this screen you see your network connections. On the left there are several options to choose. Here you click ‘Create a new connection’.

Step 3:
As you can see in this screen you can now set up a new connection. For example a private network, such as your workplace network as shown at the second point in this screen.
Click ‘Next’ to start creating a network.

Step 4:
In this screen you can choose what kind connection you want to set up. Choose ‘Connect to the network at my workplace’ and click ‘Next’.

Step 5:
Choose here the second option ‘Virtual Private Network connection’ and click ‘Next’.
The next screen is shown.

Step 6:
Here you can give the VPN connection a name. For example the name of your company and click ‘Next’.

Step 7:
In this screen you type the IP address of the network of your company. For example 157.54.20.145 and click ‘Next’.

Step 8:
Here you see a summary of the connection you just created. You can add a shortcut to your desktop for easy connecting to the network of your company using this VPN connection.
Click ‘Finish’ to complete the wizard.
After you clicked ‘Finish’ the next screen is shown.

Step 9:
Here you enter the user name and password you normally use to login at the office to connect to the network at your company.
If you click the ‘Properties’ button you can make a few settings for this connection.

After you clicked the ‘Connect’ button, your computer will try to connect to the network of your company and if everything is set up well you are working on the network at the office just as you are AT the office.

If you take a look at your network connections you see that there is a new connection: the VPN connection you just created.
