Early Years of the Mount Veeder Wine Industry

The historical interest in the Mount Veeder AVA is largely due to the European tradition of valuing mountain vineyard sites. Captain Stalham Wing produced the first wines on the mountain in the 1860s. His wines were well received, and the popularity of the viticultural area quickly grew.

John Henry Fisher established Mayacamas Vineyards in 1889. He also raised horses and used his property as a base for his other entrepeneurial activities.

Colonel Thomas Gier owned what is now the Hess Collection Winery in the early Twentieth Century. In 1929, he sold the property to the Christian Brothers due to financial woes brought on by the depression. The Christian Brothers produced Sacramental wine in the winery during Prohibition.

Donald Hess currently leases the same production facilities from the Christian Brothers. The Hess Collection also houses an exquisite art collection, and is located adjacent to the Mount LaSalle retreat and retirement center.
