Enjoy Switzerland – Relax in Heidiland’s Hot Spas

Among the many things Switzerland is famous for are its wellness spas. For many people, vacation means leaving the stress of daily life for a few days of relaxing in soothing hot waters, massage, salons, saunas, meditation, and gourmet cuisine in one of Switzerland’s many spas.

One of the foremost of those is Bad Ragaz, a small, quaint resort town about 90 miles Southeast of Zurich along the A3 highway. Situated on the Tamina River, its thermal springs treat rheumatism and respiratory disorders as well as the tired, stressed, overworked bodies and minds of those just needing some pampering and gentle healing.

Among a number of thermal pools throughout the resort, the Tamina thermal spa with its year-round temperature of 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 F) is the favorite. Located behind the luxurious Grand Hotel Quellenhof, the Tamina baths are open daily 7:30 am to 9 pm. Admission is 16 SwF. If you’re flying into Zurich, consider making Bad Ragaz a great 1 day-1 night stopover to recover from jetlag and the stress of the daily grind before continuing your vacation.

The hills above Bad Ragaz are where the Heidiland region got its name. Well-known Swiss author Johanna Spyri used the village of Maienfeld as the setting for Heidi, her wholesome classic of children’s and the place milks its claim to fame enthusiastically. Local trains between Chur and Bad Ragaz stop at Maienfeld station, starting point for a gentle half-day amble up into the lush pastureland on the mountain slopes.
