Have you seen all the fancy abdominal training equipment targeted for exercises to lose love handles? How about the weight loss pills being marketed as effective for inducing weight loss from target areas such as the waist, thighs, buttocks, and other ‘problem areas’? Does any of this work? The short answer is no. Don’t waste your money on any of this stuff!

Weight Loss 101 – How Your Body Burns Energy

First of all, to understand that spot reduction does not exist, you should understand how your body works.

This is the basic rule: what you consume, you must burn off. Each time your body takes in more calories than you can burn off, your body stores this extra energy as fat deposits. Now if you had an active lifestyle then no worries, you will simply burn off this stored energy in no time. HOWEVER, if you lead a sedentary lifestyle then you can imagine your body simply trying to pile on all that extra energy (fat!).

In men, this extra energy is usually stored as fat in the waist and abdomen areas. In women, it is often stored in the hips, thighs and abdomen areas. These are not your ‘problem areas’ – they’re a problem for everyone!

During your weight loss efforts, you may be tempted to try these miracle pills and gadgets that are supposedly great at spot reduction. But guess what? These pills and cures don’t have any control whatsoever on where the body gets its source of energy.

Now you may argue that ab exercises do work as exercises to lose love handles. Well, it’s true that ab exercises can help you to get a slimmer waistline. However, be sure to take in the whole picture to understand why ab exercises work.

Ab exercises are difficult so they do require a lot of energy. Since your body is hearing the call for more energy, it will turn to your fat deposits for more. Now, where again is most excess energy stored? Your waist right? So logically, it will get fat from that area (but not just there!).

Abdominal exercises challenge and stress your ab muscles. As such, those muscles are strengthened and are now better able to hold in the internal organs. The result can be a ‘leaner look’ for you.

So as you can see, ab exercises don’t exactly work directly as exercises to lose love handles. Rather they are part of an effective overall weight loss fitness routine.

In the end, don’t be fooled by any claims about eliminating fat from certain areas of your body only. For truly effective and long-lasting weight loss, a lifestyle change focused on eating healthy and exercising regularly is your ticket to looking and feeling good.
