Famous French foods are culturally enriched, and globally enjoyed foods cooked with ingredients from the many regions of France.

Every region contains it’s own unique “terroir, or territory, of soil micro-organisms, plants and animals. These unique ecosystems are espoused by wine enthusiasts to produce unique assemblages of flavors to unique to each regions.

From these unique flavors regions of France have such Famous French foods as salad nicoise, creme brulee, truffles, and brie come to be known.

There are also many mouth watering famous French desserts that have survived the trials of time to be featured as a kitchen classic on this page.

Paris is known to have virtually all forms of French foods from every region, as it is the central relay station for all of Frances Trains. It is here you will find the most common and typical French foods eaten by Parisians and tourist alike.

The Baguette is a common French bread, distinguished by it’s long slender shape, thin crunchy crust and slits cut into the top to allow for proper gas exchange during cooking. the baguette is cooked in a steam injected oven which expands and sets the crust, while producing a light and fluffy crumb.


Croissant or Tartines (toast) spread w/ butter and jam are among the most common French breakfast items, enjoyed in the early hours with a warm cup of French cafe au lait. Most cafes and brasseries sell these along with a plethora of typical French dishes.

To a true Frenchmen, Cheese is the favored pair to a light and fluffy baguette. Every Terroir, or region, of France is unique in the cheese produced due to the peculiarities of the particulate aerosol mold spores found in the caves that the young cheeses were aged in. There are dozens of varieties and hundreds of unique varieties sold from local market “Fromagerie” stalls and vendors.

Crème brûlée’s earliest reference is in François Massialot’s 1691 cookbook. This well known French dessert traditionally consisted of a vanilla custard base with a hard caramelized top, served cold in a ramekin. One might find a Creme brulee in the busy streets of Paris sold by a street-side patissier or on the restaurant menu of a loire valley restaurant.

Crepes are a thin pancake like wrap made with milk (or water), eggs, and wheat flour fried in a pan. This famous French food originated in Brittany, a region in the northwest of France. Nowadays their consumption is widespread in France and it is considered a national dish. There are two traditional Crepe batters; Sweet and/or Savory depending on the dish and the fillings range accordingly.

Crepes Suzette are a French dessert traditionally filled with a thick caramelized orange sauce and topped with whipped cream.

Escargot, originating from Burgundy, consists of cooked snails served as an appetizer. Usually stuffed with butter, garlic and parsley. This famous French food is found throughout France. Deeeeelicious~

Napoleon or Mille Feuille(literally thousand leaves) as it’s known in France, is a sweet dessert comprised of alternating layers of puff pastry filled between with puff pastry. classically glazed with icing or alternating chocolate strips that are combed to produce a beautiful visual effect.

Quiche is perhaps one of the most famous French foods eaten for breakfast. This savory French egg dish is most commonly served as “Quiche Lorraine” coming from the Lorraine region of France. Quiche Lorraine is a simple baked egg dish composed of egg, cream, and ham – no cheese, as made known to Americans by Julia Child.

Ratatouille is a traditional French Provençal stewed vegetable dish, originating from Nice. The key ingredient is tomato, with garlic, onion, zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers seasoned with various herbs de Provence cooked over an open flame.

La Salade Nicoise is a famous French salad dish originating from the Provence/Cote d’Azur region of France. Ingredients often vary(random daily fresh greens, vegetabls, and fruit) while tuna and black (kalamata) olives are key characteristics.

Souffle are one of the most esteemed dishes of famous French cuisine. Prized for its airy, light and fluffy texture, this dish is often prepared as a savory cheese dish or a chocolate dessert delicacy. As with the crepes, the variation seen in this famous French food is astounding.

Truffles are perhaps the most famous French mushroom, and coincidentally the most expensive mushroom in the world, followed by morels, chanterelles and the like. Truffles are a spherical shaped fungi found underground, traditionally with the aid of a trained pig or dog. The Perigord Black and the Italian White are the most prized of all truffles.
