First Time Windows Update

Many people are not aware of , or haven’t used, Windows Update from the Microsoft web site.

The updates are free, easy to do, and fix the many security issues in Windows and Internet Explorer. There are also improvements to Windows add-ins such as Windows Media Player.

One very nice feature of the Microsoft update feature is that you don’t need to know which version of software will work on your computer. Windows 98, ME, 2000 Pro, and XP will only receive the correct updates. The Windows update feature will determine what you need automatically.

Windows 98, 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP.
As a minimum, update Internet Explorer to version 6. The update will do this for you.

Windows XP
Windows XP service pack 2 added the “security center”. It gives you a warning when your automatic updates are not turned on. Before service pack 2, you had to start updates yourself.
