The Friendship Star is one of many traditional blocks. It is a very easy nine patch block that incorporates squares with half square triangles. Each square is equal to 1/3 of the finished block, plus 1/2″ for seam allowance.


1. Cut 4 corner blocks from the same fabric

2. Cut 1 center block from a contrasting fabric

3. Cut 2 squares from a dark fabric and 2 squares from a light fabric. These 2 squares should be the the same size as your other squares plus as 1 1/2″.

4. Sew 4 half square triangles

a. Draw a diagonal line through the center of the light fabric squares.

b. Place one dark and one light fabric right sides together. Sew 1/4″ from both sides of diagonal line. Repeat with remaining two pieces.

c. Cut on diagonal lines. You will have four half square triangles. Press toward darker color.

5. Row 1, sew a square to a half square triangle to a square. Press toward outer square.

6. Row 2, sew a half square triangle to center square to a half square triangle. Press toward center square.

7. Row 3, same as row 1, make sure you star points are in opposite directions. Press toward outer square

7. Lay out your squares, using picture above for placement. Be careful that your north and south, east and west star points are opposite each other.

8. Sew the three rows together.
