when the town council approved a strip annexation that encompassed 53 square miles. The town of Gilbert was small, but they envisioned growth similar to neighboring cities. Prior to the 70’s going back to the early 1900’s, Gilbert was a small agricultural town.

In 1902, the Arizona Eastern Railway raised money through donations to build a line from Phoenix to Florence. The rail would be laid through property owned by William “Bobby” Gilbert.

Thus, the town that sprung up around the rail became known as Gilbert. Until the 1920’s, Gilbert was known as the “Hay Capitol of the World.” With the Roosevelt Dam and The Eastern and Consolidated Canals being constructed, the small farming town flourished.
