Sometimes when you want to golf Sun City, you can’t! They have so many tournaments there that they are sometimes closed for golfing at just the time you want to golf. Wel, a short drive away is a terrific course, designed by Jack Nichlaus called Pecanwood. Have a look.

Pecanwood Golf Course

The Pecanwood Golf Course, located slightly more than a half hours drive from the Johannesburg Airport, is South Africa’s only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. It is a young four years old course and was officially opened by THE MAN himself, Jack Nicklaus, in August 1998.

You first see the backdrop mountains and then the Hartbeespoort Dam and then the clubhouse. The mountains are as old as time itself and are reputed to be the oldest mountain range in the world. The Dam is a thing of great pride among South Africans for water is often a scarce commodity in this country and it is quite a feat of modern engineering. The Pecanwood Golf Course, with it’s lush fairways and greens appears like a oasis in the midst. There are no blind shots here but lots of bunkers. While it is not the most mature course you will ever play – the trees still have that gangling teenager appearance – it would be a huge mistake to equate it’s youth with a no brainer course. It is a Challenge to brain rather than brawn. Would you expect less of Jack Nicklaus?

In the past, Pecanwood has hosted the Nelson Mandela Invitational – one of my favourites. The proceeds go to Mr. Mandela’s Children’s charities.
