Guide to Maintenance and Parts for Your Bicycle

You will find that online stores carry an exceptional selection of parts and components for your bicycle. These sources are so complete, if inclined, you can build your own bicycle. Or, you can become a bike mechanic, with all the tools needed to repair and maintain your bicycle for ultimate performance.

Now, for many of us, we just want to ride our bikes and have no desire to or time to become a bike repair expert. Obviously, it is important to understand how your bike works, and be able to make the simplest of repairs, from fixing a flat tire to fixing your chain, especially when you are stranded out on the road.

At a minimum, you should carry mini-tools in your seat pack for road- or trail-side emergencies. We highly recommend either Topeak The Alien Tool or Topeak The Alien XT Multi-Tool. These multi-tool sets have everything you need and folds easily into a convenient case.

Even if you continue to use your local bike shop for routine repairs and maintenance, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that (I do), we recommend you learn as much as you can about your bike. Everything will then make more sense to you and you will learn to make quick adjustments to improve your performance. Two great sources are Bicycling Magazine’s Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair and Break It, Fix It, Ride It Interactive Repair CD ROM.

If you do decide to take it to the next level, then you will need quality mechanical tool kits and work stands. When selecting work stands, look for ones that are stable, that can rotate 360 degrees, have adjustable heights and can fold up for easy storage. The better work stands can be converted to a wheel truing stand, with a simple add-on part. We recommend high quality Park and Spin Doctor products.
