Guitar Tips – Powerful Power Chords

Elvis Elvis

Food. Water. Power Chords.

As a guitar player these are about the three most important things to you. Food and water keep you going, and power chords keep your songs going.

Let me tell you a little about power chords:

- Show me a famous song and there’s a really, really good chance I’ll show you a power chord.

- They sound awesome cranked all the way up with distortion. My guess is this is where the “power” part comes in.

- They’re super-easy to play. Take a look at one:

E|------|
B|------|
G|------|
D|-5----|
A|-5----|
E|-3----|

Easy, right? Trust me, they are. You’ve got this.

The Red-Headed Stepchord vs, The Octave

There is one thing you should know about these chords, though. They really aren’t chords at all. Oh no, you say?

Well, no.

They flunk on a technicality because they only have two different notes instead of three.

Looking at this:

E|-----------------|
B|-----------------|
G|-----------------|
D|-5------5-----5--|
A|-5---------------|
E|-3----3----3-----|

which appears to have three notes, you have to remember that the lowest and highest notes are actually the same note, just played at different octaves.

I still love them, though. And if you don’t already, you will soon.
