History Of Atlas Peak Wines

The history of Atlas Peak Wines began when early European immigrants began settling on the mountain during the mid-nineteenth century. A large resort was built in the 1870s as a center for rehabilitation and well-being. The remnants of the foundation exists to this day.

Because the hills are so dry, only the most industrious and dedicated growers have historically planted vineyards on Atlas Peak. The region was slowly developed with houses, and Silverado Country Club was eventually established at the base of the hill. My grandparents lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years.

Atlas Peak Winery was established by Pierre Antinori and his partners in the late 1980s. Antinori is descended from a well-respected Italian family that has been making wine for over 600 years. Antinori pioneered the “Super Tuscan” style of wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. His heavy investment in Atlas Peak is indicative of the quality of the viticultural area.

 History Of Atlas Peak Wines

Of the approximately 565 acres of vineyards currently planted in the Atlas Peak AVA, Antinori’s Atlas Peak Winery owns 495. The vineyards are split relatively evenly between Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Chardonnay. The Atlas Peak AVA is an extremely specialized wine producing region that is an example of the increasingly terroir-focused varietals being grown in specific regions throughout California Wine Country.
