The talents of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace started the history of Versace back in 1978.

Gianni Versace founded the international fashion house ‘Gianna Versace S.p.A. which produces clothing, accessories, fragrances, cosmetics and home furnishings.

Gianni Versace also designed costumes for theatre and movies. He was openly gay and spent 11 years with his model companion Antonio D’Amico until his tragic murder on July 15, 1997.

Shortly after his death, it was announced that Gianni’s older brother Santo would become the new CEO of the company with his sister Donatella becoming the new head of design.

In Gianni’s will, he left 50 percent of his fashion empire to his niece Allegra (Donatella’s daughter) who inherited this half a billion dollars stake as soon as she turned 18 in 2004. She now has the final decision in the Versace clothing line.

Versaces first boutique was opened in Milan’s Via della Spiga in 1978. Today, there are over 300 Versace exclusive boutiques at 81 locations around the world. Versace also operates an upscale hotel in Gold Coast, Australia called the Palazzo Versace.

Versace Lines

The Versace Group consists of several lines which are Gianni Versace Couture, Versace Home Collection, Versace Jeans Couture and Versace Collection.

Gianni Versace Couture
This line contains high end mostly handmade clothing, jewellery, watches, cosmetics, fragrances and home furnishings. This was the only line to be featured on the runway during Milans fasion week but recently, this has not been the case.

The line, directly headed and predominately designed by Donatella Versace is extremely expensive as dresses can cost around $10,000 and suits $5,000.

Versace Jeans Couture & Versace Collection

Geared towards a younger audience and more widely available to a variety of demographics, these lines focuses on seasonal trends and incorporates certain elements from the company’s signature brand ‘Gianni Versace’.

Versaces Models & Celebrity Culture

When it comes to Versace advertising, models and celebrities go hand in hand. In the history of Versace, a handful of celebrities has modelled and been the face for the company which includes but is not limited to the following: Late rapper Tupac Shakur, Ashton Kutcher, Madonna, Demi Moore, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Halle Berry.

Notable fans of the Versace fashion house includes celebrities such as Gianni’s friend Elton John, Beyonce, Axel Rose, and the late Princess Diana who turned down an offer of £1,000,000 to celebrate her divorce from Prince Charles by appearing on the catwalk in Versace.

Gianni Versace has achieved a huge amount within the history of Versace. With the help of his close family, Gianni established perhaps the most well known fashion brand in the world. Versace is an iconic and influential brand of legendary status. Today, his legacy is continued by his family and ever growing business.
