How do you take a great sunset photo? Well the first thing we need to ask – does your camera have a ‘M’ or Manual setting? For sunset or sunrise photography we will be using manual settings or if your camera has an ‘A’ or ‘S’ setting we will go into using these settings as well. Oh and don’t worry you don’t need to have an expensive SLR camera to get great photos (it will help but not necessary).

Ok, now that we have the camera on ‘Manual’ what we want you to do is to set the Aperture to a high number (preferably over 10). This will need the shutter speed to be altered to a slower speed – possibly below 1/30 of a second. This is where a tripod will become useful – otherwise you will get a blurred photo. The basic principal is a small aperture (high number) with a slow shutter speed.

Does the camera you use have an inbuilt light meter or does it just adjust the brightness of the lcd screen on the back of the camera.

Secrets to taking great Sunset photos

The secret to taking a great photos at Dusk or Dawn is not taking ‘a’ photo. When I am taking sunset or sunrise photos I will often take up to 100 plus photos – hey not even I can get it right every time. Some will be out of focus, some will be too bright (overexposed) some will be too dark (underexposed) so the best to do is to experiment with your camera and adjust the Aperture by one ‘F’ stop at a time and then take a series of photos with different shutter speeds. If you can change the ISO rating of the camera (used to be the speed of the old film you used in your camera) basically gives you a different graininess (quality) of photo. I would recommend that you use no larger a number than 200 – I normally use an ISO of 100 which gives a beautiful clear photo.
