Using Walmart beef jerky nutrition as the basis of this comparison is pretty representative of the commercial jerky market as a whole. Walmart sells Jack Link’s jerky which is a very popular brand. Other large retailers sell Jack Link’s as well, but if you compare their ingredients to other big-name brands such as Pemmican, Oberto, Slim Jim, Jerky Hut and more, they are very similar – and almost identical in some cases.

For starters, here are a few things you definitely DO NOT want in your jerky:

  • Anything hydrolyzed, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. This typically means dangerous trans fats.
  • Modosodium Glutamate (MSG)
  • Sodium Erythorbate
  • Sodium Nitrite
  • Corn syrup or corn syrup solids
  • Any other artificial ingredients

You also don’t want jerky that has been made from meat that comes from animals raised on growth hormones and pumped full of antibiotics. Typically, the only way to avoid these things is to stick with all natural and organic jerky that comes from grass or organically fed animals.
