There are so many choices when it comes to building your own inground pool it can make your head swim, okay bad pun.
We will help sort out some of the ins and outs of this big under taking. Did I say it would be easy. No, I didn’t. But it can be a lot of fun making this dream a reality.
-Why choose an Inground Pool-
You already know that this type of pool as opposed to an above ground pool adds value to your home.
You also know that it’s a great place for family and friends to gather for BBQ, picnics and parties of every excuse.
All the great benefits are exactly why you’ve decide on purchasing a pool. But, why an inground pool as apossed to an above ground pool?
When we discuss the different construction methods, you will see that the inground pool is a permanant structure that will add more integrity to your backyard.
This leads us to……
-$$$What can you afford$$$-
Here’s where the discussion begins on what budget, location and type of inground pool will be the most suitable as we approach this new era of our lives.

Everyone who is involved in the decision making process of getting a pool has an idea of what the perfect inground pool should include.
Ultimately, it is the budget that has the final say in most cases. We prefer to steer you in the direction of quality rather than quantity.
A huge inground pool is no good if it’s falling apart at the seams, while a smaller, high quality pool can bring years of enjoyment and can even be remodeled down the road if needs change.
-Considerations for your inground pool-
One of the most import considerations when deciding on a location for your new swimming pool is Pool Safety.
How visible will the pool be from indoors, for aesthetic reasons and for safety? Are swimming pool owners required to have a Pool Fence?
Among the many things to consider, age and abilities of swimmers, accessibility to neighbors and other potential swimmers.
When you own a pool, you are liable for the safety of others. You’ll need to check local requirements.
There are a few extras to consider as well. For instance, the avid swimmer who wants exercise may consider a small adjustable current pool.
How about a spa to relax in or for added beauty the vanishing edge pool?
We’ll cover the following…
Concrete, Gunite, Fiberglass and Vinyl.
-CONCRETE-The choice with the
most integrity. These pools offer a virtual cornucopia of design variations.
Traditional and steadfast, these pools have earned a hearty reputation for being long lasting.
Being the most costly and permanent, concrete swimming pools are mainly used in commercial applications since they are normally larger and experience more swimmer traffic.
Concrete needs to be resurfaced about every thirteen years.
-GUNITE-There is little difference in materials used and
variety of designs that can be accomplished in building the Gunite Swimming Pool versus the Concrete Swimming Pool.
The main difference is the way the materials are installed and the cost. Once the hole is dug, in a concrete install, wooden forms are placed in the hole and the mixed concrete is poured into them.
In a Gunite install, a framework of 3/8 inch steel reinforced rods, or rebar, is installed in a grid-like fashion.
The rebar is spaced approximately 10 inches apart and wired together. Once the grid is in place the whole area is covered with a heavy mixture of cement and sand combined with water in the sprayer unit, creating, Gunite.
These two different applications are both allowed a week or so to dry. The wooden forms are removed from the concrete, then they are finished in similar ways.
The walls are finished with glass, ceramic, or mosaic tiles, plaster, paint, pebbles, marble sheen (marcite), a vinyl liner or other.
-FIBERGLASS-Oooh, low maintenance, sweet! Disregard all the external features of a pool and what are we left with? The
interior vessel which holds water.
This is a watertight option. Fiberglass does not chip, tear nor does it alter the chemistry of the pool’s water.
This option works well in all soil conditions because it has flexibility that accommodates ground movement, more extreme temperatures and moisture.
If you like a pre-fab, quick install and don’t mind having a shorter list of design options, this is a good option to consider. And it never needs to be resurfaced or replaced.
-VINYL-We’re talking
dollars and cents here. And yes, I do mean a vinyl inground pool.
The hole is dug the same shape as the vinyl liner. The ground is leveled with sand for a smooth bottom, the frame is assembled and set in place, same as the Above Ground Pool.
The vinyl is inserted and firmly attached to the frame, then the air is drawn out by vacuum while the pool is being filled.
Still with many design options, and for a little more, the ability to add custom features, such as coping to make it more like the concrete option.
The smooth interior will impress even the most delicate skin. Another nice feature about vinyl is install time.
There is as much excavation as the other type of inground pools, but like the fiberglass option there is not the added process of the concrete or gunite.
It takes only about one-third of the time as it does to install a concrete or gunite inground pool.
Vinyl does need to be replaced every ten years so if you intend to go long term on this option you may end up in a “pay-me-now or pay-me-later” situation.
-Finally-Once you’ve discussed all the Swimming Pool Safety issues, decided on a location, set your budget, decided on your Swimming Pool Design, decide who is going to handle the Pool Maintenance, have the inground pool built and the landscaping
beautifully finished you’ll be ready to announce your first
pool party
-Congratulations!-You’ve just completed one of the Amazing Backyards most challenging, and
rewarding backyard projects!
