Irish Cuisin – Soda Bread Recipe

This is a classic Irish bread. Serve it with some wonderful strong Irish cheddar, mmmm!

Ingredients:
12oz wholemeal flour + extra for kneading
4 oz oatmeal
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp salt
5 ml runny honey
½ pt buttermilk
2 tsp milk

Method:
In a large bowl, place the flour, oatmeal, bicarbonate of soda, salt and combine. Make a well in the centre of the bowl and gradually beat in the honey, milk and buttermilk until you have a soft dough (you can add a further tsp of milk if you need to). Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for 5 min. Once kneaded form into a round and lightly press a knife into the bread to form a cross. Brush with a little milk.Place on a lightly oiled baking sheet and bake at 200C for 20 – 25 min.
