Journal Prompts for Teenagers and High School Students

    • What foreign country would you most like to visit, and why?
    • If technology were advanced enough, and it were legal, would you be willing to clone yourself?
    • What is your favorite daydream or fantasy?
    • What is the most mischievous thing you can recall doing as a child?
    • If you could be five years old again for one day, how would you spend it?
    • What is your greatest comfort? Is it a possession, a soothing sound, a particular food?
    • What chore or obligation do you despise the most?
    • If you could change one thing about your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner, what would it be?
    • What is your own personal theme song?
    • Should parents try and steer their child away from mistakes, or should they allow them to learn by experience?
    • Who would you most like to apologize to, and for what?
    • Do you consider yourself competitive by nature?
    • What are your core values that you live your life by?
    • What are you glad your parents taught you?
    • Do you consider yourself intelligent? In what way?
    • Describe your favorite place to be, in as much detail as you can.
    • Write about what is going on around you right now.
    • Describe, in detail, what it feels like to cry.
    • Every so often it seems like the entire society and media becomes briefly but intensely obsessed with something that affects them hardly at all- Paris Hilton’s jail time, for example. Why is this? Have you ever felt yourself caught up in it?
    • Do you have a morning routine? An evening routine? How and when did you fall into it?
    • What’s a talent you really wish you had?
    • What keeps you going when times are hard?
    • Do you have any rituals or superstitions you adhere to?
    • What stops you from being creative?
    • Describe your favorite piece of music and how it makes you feel.
    • Do you ever challenge the rules and question authority? Are there times you wish you could, but hold back? Why?
    • How have you ended relationships? Do you regret how you ended any of them?
    • Do you believe in ghosts or spirits? What are your thoughts on the afterlife, if you believe there is one?
    • Has a book or movie ever changed your life? Talk about it.
    • Describe what it feels like to be loved by a pet.
    • What makes you feel the most secure and safe?
    • Are there any topics you avoid talking about? Why is that?
    • What do you feel is the most pressing global issue today? Global warming, world hunger, disease, overpopulation? Something else? Are we doing enough about it?
