Learn shuffle card tricks with the overhand shuffle

Elvis Elvis

Use the overhand shuffle to master shuffle card tricks :  There are many false or overhand shuffles you can perform as a magician. The basic goal of performing an overhand shuffle is to keep a card or group of cards on the top or bottom of the pack.

This allows you to control cards in the deck and perform amazing shuffle card tricks. The basic motion of the overhand shuffle involves shuffling off cards in small packets from the right hand to the left drawn off by the left hand thumb.

Here is how I do it:

First you must have the pack in correct position. Hold your left hand half closed, palm upwards, and place the pack in it face downwards. You should be holding the deck face down in your left hand at about a 45 degree angle towards the right.

Holding the deck in the correct position, seize the lower half of the deck with your right hand

Lift this lower half upwards to clear the portion maintained in the left hand, then bring it downwards over the other cards until its lower side touches the left palm. Lightly press the thumb against the top card of this packet and simultaneously lift the right hand. This will cause the card or cards pulled off by the left thumb to fall on top of the packet retained in the left hand.

You will want to repeat this action until all of the cards pulled with your right hand have been shuffled off on to those held by the left hand. Make sure to maintain a smooth tempo through out the overhand shuffle. Don’t go too fast or too slow. In making this shuffle do not look at your hands, practice the motion until it looks natural!

Once you master the overhand shuffle you can invent your own shuffle card tricks.

Control the bottom card:

Begin the overhand shuffle by lifting the lower half of the pack and at the same time lightly press your middle left finger against the bottom card. This will hold back the bottom card and keep it on the bottom. Complete the overhand shuffle by shuffling off the remaining cards in your right hand.

You can even repeat this same action and the bottom card will always remain on bottom. This is simple and will look very natural with practice.

Control the top card:

Begin the overhand shuffle by lifting the lower half of the pack and at the same time lightly press the top card with your left thumb. Without hesitation complete the overhand shuffle by shuffling off the remaining cards in your right hand. The top card is now at the bottom of the pack.

With the top card now on the bottom, start the overhand shuffle and repeat all the way down to the last card which goes on top. When this motion is complete the original top card will be moved from the bottom back to the top.

Retain top and bottom cards in position:

Begin the overhand shuffle by griping the entire pack with the right hand and at the same time lightly press the top card with the left thumb and the bottom card with the left middle finger. The top card will fall onto the bottom card as you complete the overhand shuffle by shuffling off the remaining cards in your right hand.

Repeat the same move exactly as before by lifting all but the top and bottom cards, then shuffle off to the last card (the original top card) with those in the right hand and lay it back on top.
