Lightning Strike in the Kalahari Caught With A Canon

Elvis Elvis

Luck? Sure! There is always luck involved in taking a shot of something as rare as a lightning strike. But they say the more you practice the luckier you get… Here I took about 30 exposures with my camera on a tripod hoping the lightning would strike where I aimed my long lens (100-400mm zoom at 400mm with an effective focal length of 640mm). I got only one shot worth keeping.

While taking the 30 second exposures one at a time, I was also hard at work starting a fire for a braai in the Mata-Mata restcamp of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, while hoping that the thunder storm wouldn’t come too close to our camp. It was quite a run-around!
