These beautiful fabric coasters would make great wedding or house warming gifts for little or no money.
Made from fabric scraps leftover from other sewing projects, these beverage coasters cost me nothing. Talk about a frugal gift! But the recipient of the gift will never know it, especially if you use beautiful fabrics!

Even if you go out and buy fabric, you will only need about 1/6th of a yard to make between eight and eleven coasters. For that you could splurge on really elegant fabric.
You can make these in assembly line fashion for a very fast and easy gift.
To make these fabric coasters, first cut a 5 x 5 inch square paper pattern. Using a paper cutter will make this quick and easy.
If your fabric has a varied pattern like the patchwork pattern here, it may help to cut a 4.5 x 4.5 inch square (the finished dimension of each drink coaster) in the middle of a piece of paper, to lay over your fabric.
The easiest way to cut this is to cut in from one edge, then retape the edge after you’ve cut the square out.
You can then see how the finished coaster will look, and if you like the placement of the pattern.
Skip this step if your fabric has an overall pattern or no pattern at all.
Next cut 4 coasters (or 6 or 8 or whatever you wish) out of your fabric. Then cut the same number of pieces from your backing fabric. This can be plain or another fancy fabric if you want to make them special on both sides. I chose a plain burgundy that I already had on hand to use for mine.
Finally cut 4 pieces of felt. These will be the lining to make your drink coasters absorbant. You will cut these about 4 1/4 inches square. I found it easier to just use my 5 x 5 pattern, then trim the excess off.
Unless your fabric is very light colored you can use any color of felt you might have on hand. I used scraps of several colors for mine. (A great way to use up those scraps!)
You’re ready to sew. This is a super simple sewing project. First pin the front and back pieces of your fabric coasters with right sides together. Start sewing about 1 inch in from one edge with a 1/4 inch seam. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning.
Continue sewing around the coaster. As you round each corner, stop a little before you get to where you would turn, then take two stitches diagonally across the corner. Turn down the next side and continue stitching. Those diagonal stitches will create a nice square corner without a lot of bunching when you turn your beverage coasters right side out.
Stitch all the way around, leaving a 3 inch opening on the side you first began stitching on, and backstitching again at the end.
Trim the corners diagonally about 1/8 inch away from stitching to get rid of bulk in the corners.
Turn your beverage coaster right side out. Gently use a ruler to help get nice square corners.
Iron your fabric coasters, turning under the edges of the opening.
Slip a felt square inside each one, making sure it lies flat within the coaster.
Hand sew the opening closed. Hide your knot by slipping your needle under the fold of the opening. Then stitch across the opening taking tiny stitches first in bottom fabric, then top fabric, etc.
Finally, topstitch the beverage coaster about 3/8 inch from edge.
That’s it! So easy and so pretty! Present your fabric coasters nicely by tying a piece of beautiful ribbon around the set like a present. You now have an elegant set of custom beverage coasters you or your lucky gift recipient will love!
For an extra special gift, include a bottle of wine, perhaps a couple of wine glasses, and tuck it all in a pretty basket with your custom-made wine glass coasters!
