Spoil yourself and stay a little longer. Golf Plettenberg Bay! This Addon Touris for people who fall in love with the East Coast.

The Plettenberg Bay Country Club

Located in the Piesang River Valley, Plettenberg Bay Country Club has a magnificent golf course. This Club has undergone some transformation since the mid 1990′s. The Clubhouse was rebuilt then and the course has been the focal point of some comprehensive reconstructions. The result is a highly rated golf course with kikuyu grass fairways and bent grass greens. North Americans who have not golfed in South Africa will be able to chock up a new golfing experience as these grasses are quite different to those grasses grown on their home courses.
A point of interest about this course is that the entire area has been designated as a Nature Reserve where an alien tree eradication program is in effect. Many of the trees in South Africa are imports from South America and Australia. There is a move underway to return this area back to it’s natural state with only indigenous trees and plants. While there are many traps and hazards, the Piesang River may prove to be the biggest.

Big Ocean Game

Not all Big Game here is land locked. Some is in the Indian Ocean. Whales, dolphins and seals abound around Robberg Peninsula. So what better way to see it than an ocean trip out into the Indian Ocean.

Big Land Game

Not all the Game Reserves in South Africa are goverment run. The interest in Africa’s wildlife has led to a large number of private folks doing their bit to save and sustain this part of the ecosystem by putting large tracts of land at the disposal of the wildlife here. One such place is the highly respected and internationally acclaimed Shamwari Private Game Reserve covering over 18,000 hectares.

Bring your camera. You are in for quite a show. Not only are the ‘Big Five’ here – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinos  – but you will be able to see over 18 species of antelope. There are so many birds that the owners have set things up so serious bird watchers can seriously watch birds. Big, small, beautiful, ugly, dull colored feathers to psychodelic – a bird watcher’s delight. Not a bird watcher? I think you will be before you leave here.

Ok. Here’s a teeny lesson in Swahili. Boma – this is a protected outdoor area something like a big, huge hunter’s blind. But not quite. It’s more elegant. You will want to experience this eating out under the awesome Southern sky for yourself. This is where at least one meal will be eaten when you are out on one of the safari drives. I did this myself for the first time last month and I can attest to the fact that it is a fun way to eat mouth watering meals, chat with other safari participants, see if you can find The Scorpion in the southern skies and just generally enjoy yourself. Venus, by the way looks close enough to touch. When you are out in the bush away from the city lights, it is pretty hard to miss.

Morning, afternoon and evening Safari drives in open Land Rovers through the Reserve are available here. Different animals hunt at different times. Chances of seeing some are better at night so for sure, take an evening land rover drive. Each drive has a highly trained – in the ways of both animals and tourists – guide. This is good! “Guess who’s coming to dinner in the lion’s den?” will not be in reference to you. And if you see something you don’t recognize, these guides will know what it is and tell you anything you want to know about it.

    Accommodation

Long Lee Manor is one of 5 luxurious lodges. Built in 1910, this Edwardian manor has been refurbished to offer visitors comfortable rooms with either air conditioning or ceiling fans in summer and heated rooms in winter. (Generally speaking, South Africa does not have central heating and it can get chilly here in May, June, July and August.) While there is a main dining room, meals are also served outside under the stars. And they are delicious!
