Smartscaping – Urban landscaping with drought-tolerant plants

The word Xeriscaping was coined by combining xeros (Greek for “dry”) with landscape. Smartscaping – plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off.

Recent Communities in Bloom Awards were given in recognition and appreciation to Vulcan community members for their efforts.

Well arranged and appropriate choices of plant material have resulted in a magnificent garden and yard. Initial preparation of beds may require more start-up work than simply laying sod but the results are well worth it.

Smartscaped landscapes requires that people change their mindset as to what types of plants they are able to practically and economically maintain.Continued hot dry summers and little winter snow cover necessitate the need for adapting our landscape designs.

This xeriscape-friendly landscape uses traditional flowers in a judicial manner that requires less time and work for maintenance. Efficient application of water – drip irrigation should be used where possible.

Some homeowners may object to this non-traditional use landscaping a front yard, but reality is that with global warming and enforced water restrictions this is ‘Smartscape’at it’s best in Vulcan, Alberta!
