Highly rated sony projector: Sony Electronics meets consumers demand by developing the next-generation Cineza(R) front projector having equipped with the latest 3LCD panel.

The first of our Sony reviews is for the Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza LCD Video Projector. This is one of the new Sony Projectors that feature the Advanced Iris system. This alleviates many of the problems formerly associated with LCD projectors in regards to pixelation or screen door effects. The advanced Iris also aids substantially in the Contrast ratios and contrast levels allowing for a broader range of media to be properly displayed in a wider range of lighting environments. This is something LCD projectors have not been noted for in the past and is considered a welcome improvement.

The Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza is portable, lightweight and easy to set up. It comes with adjustable feet to make leveling a breeze and unlike many projectors in its size and class. It even offers both horizontal and vertical adjustments for screen displays. Many of the higher end models available have only vertical adjustments to allow for placement and display adjustments and compensation for fine tuning.

Sony Projector Reviews

The Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza offers a wide range of available viewing aspect-ratios as well. It has a full spectrum of acceptable video formats including widescreen and regular viewing, While some of the wide-screen zooming did produce noticeable distortion, it was not too terribly bad, and will be experienced anytime a video or display is projected in a manner not consistent with the proper aspect ratio. The new and improved contrast ratio makes the sony better viewed on a lighter screen. Unlike previous LCD projectors, Sony projector offers much better detail in white/black contrast and allows for much better viewing than expected.

Video connections for the Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza include RGB Composite cables and s-video as well as the more traditional audio/video inputs allowing for a wide range of components to be used with the projector. The outputs, likewise offer a wide selection of viewing options in order to get the optimal performance from the projector in a larger variety of formats.

While the Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza may not be the most attractive or most impressive looking unit it is surprisingly versatile and has plenty of adjustments and settings for individuals to tweak for their respective viewing pleasure. All of the settings can be individually stored allowing for a quick adjustment from one format to another or from one viewer to another. This can be especially handy if the projector will be used for multi-purpose viewing, like watching videos and playing video games, or in households with more than one person who has particular preferences for their home theater experience.

The overall noise of the fans was similarly impressive. The fans, while keeping the system cooling, are surprisingly quiet. Even the most rudimentary sound-systems are capable of drowning out any unwanted audio “feedback” and a good sound-system will make the fans virtually impossible to hear. While this is not relevant to everybody, it is a nice feature for those who enjoy the ultimate audio performance.

Given the reasonably cheap price and surprisingly high-quality performance, the Sony VPL-HS51 Cineza comes highly recommended on our list of LCD projectors.
