Stress Management Top 10 List

Elvis Elvis

Stress is defined as : “Forces from the outside world impinging on the individual.” It is a normal part of our day to day lives that can help us to learn and grow. On the flip-side, this virus can also cause us some pretty significant problems.

Far-Reaching Effects

The true damage from stress occurs when we let it over-run us. When this happens, it seems to comes from every angle, and all at once. We attempt to manage it typically in two ways;

Sooner or later, we will reach a point at which we say “Enough !” This usually causes us to display some pretty ugly results – either verbally and/or physically. The second method has us trying to “store it”. This makes for a “build-up” within our minds and bodies. Managing this way is volatile and while its results are not immediate, it can show devestating effects over the long-term.

Many a medical study has been conducted depicting the effects of the constant on-slaught of stress. Medically and psychologically, the body is under attack. A person could develop a virtual catalog of conditions ranging from high blood-pressure and heart conditions up to and including…you guessed it…death !

People attempt to deal with stress in a variety of counterproductive ways such as drugs, pain medications, alcohol, and eating. These simply camouflage the problem and can actually make us more sensitive to further stressors.

Stress Management Top 10 List

What can we do?
I have built my own custom-made “Top 10 List” of realistic stress-management tactics. Please feel free to use the ones that work for you, and discard the ones that don’t. These tips operate on the most simplistic of levels, and do not require a PhD for you to use them. Here they are…

  • 10. Get Rid of it.

Why do we truly need to “manage” something that we don’t need in the first place? Get rid of whatever is causing the problems immediately. Refuse to associate with the people. Don’t pay attention to the latest, depressing world news. If it doesn’t make you happy – chuck it…plain and simple…

  • 9. Exercise and eat properly.

We have all heard this one – but it bears repeating. The mind responds well to a fit body. A lean, mean, fighting machine is essential to battling the elements. If for nothing else – exercise in response to a stressful event. Take that pent-up aggression to the gym or out to the track and hammer it out! Additionally, provide that body with the correct nutrients to make it operate efficiently. Crap in = crap out !

  • 8. Distance.

Provide some distance to the things that make turbulence in your life. Keep the “whiners and complainers” out of your field of vision. Their piss-poor outlook on things will bring you down. Leave your “work” at work. I would guess that your job does not pay you enough to bring their homework and problems into YOUR home. This can work in reverse as well. Leave your personal problems home, and don’t let them effect your job performance!

  • 7. Relaxation.

Take time to be “off the clock”. Engage in activities that you enjoy and that make you happy. Hobbies, your family, reading, meditating, physical activity are all applicable here. No rules on this one! Throw on a t-shirt and just lounge !

  • 6. Focus on the solutions – not the problems.

We all have difficulties in our lives. The key to making them disappear… is to concentrate on finding the solutions – not dwelling on the problem. Need more income? – start a side job, or sell some stuff. Hate your job? – get the skills to make a career change. You get the idea. Exercise your mind and brainstorm ideas to dig your way out of the hole. If you keep harping on the problem, it stays a problem! Hit’em head on and fix’em !

  • 5. Be Yourself.

Let go of the idea that you have a image to uphold. Let me let you in on a little secret….no one is looking at you. Loosen up that tight-ass of yours and have a good time. Be silly, say what’s on your mind, do things as though you could not fail. If you trip and fall along the way – so what! Nobody – and I mean NOBODY is perfect. Let it all hang out and go get what is yours!

  • 4. Check Your Attitude.

Time for a reality check. How is your attitude? Be honest. Do you bitch and complain about everything that moves? Do you think the world owes you a living? OR are you the one who brings the party to life? It’s never too late to turn things around and be the one everybody respects. Be the rock that can be relied upon no matter how miserable conditions get. All attitude begins inside. Don’t ever let an outside influence determine how you’re going to feel. The world is full of negative people and circumstances. Rise above it all by controlling your attitude towards it.

  • 3. Dump the Worry.

In a nutshell – if you can’t control it…why worry about it? It’s totally out of your hands. The ONLY thing you can control is yourself and how you react to things. You can’t control other people and what they do. There is no point in searching out things to worry about. You have enough on your plate already. Let others handle their business and you take care of you.

  • 2. Be able to see the Big Picture.

Look at every situation by seeing the “Big Picture.” Really now…is any of this two-dollar garbage going to mean anything 100 years from now? You are focusing on a minor situation that – in the grand scheme of things – means little. Tune in to the things that are REALLY important to you. Drop the rest.

  • 1. Prioritize and Compartmentalize.

Start every day new. Look at things by placing the days in “compartments.” Every day starts fresh with the problems left on the day they happened. This is technically the “Reset-button.” Start over with a new outlook and a new attitude. Consistent forward movement and improvement. Prioritize what needs to get done within that day. Work on and complete those that are on the top of the list. Pitch the rest for another day. You can’t do it all, so do what’s important first – work hard; then move on to the next project.

There you have it – my Top 10 list to realistic stress management. Give these techniques a try. Maximize your life with success, and by learning the techniques to “take out the trash…” Make it happen ! Till next time….
