Tasty Portuguese ham recipes

Ham recipes are usually tasty, no matter in which country you are, but before eating ham it is advisable that it must be cooked. Often ham is already cooked but some are not. Anyway you can prepare ham in a lot of different ways, such as sauted, grilled, baked, broiled, simmered, etc. Also don’t forget to store your ham in the refrigerator but don’t keep it there for too long. Depending on the kind of ham you are refrigerating some can be kept in the fridge for about five days other hams a bit longer.

Ham recipes from Portugal.

Homemade Portuguese Ham (Fazer Fiambre Caseiro)


1 kg (2.2 lb) of pork without bones, 150g of salt (a bit more than 5 oz) or one cup of salt, 1 and 1/2 tea spoons of saltpeter, 1 large sour lime, 1 glass of red wine, 1 table spoons of paprika.


Do not wash the meat. Prick it well, rubbing the salt, the paprika and the red wine in at the same time. Apply saltpeter, thoroughly. Squeeze out the juice from the lime and sprinkle evenly over the meat and keep the meat under weight for 24 hours. After about 10 or 12 hours turn the meat. Then tie it into a roll. Cook till tender. Cool, remove string. When required, cut into fine slices and use for making sandwiches or serve with salad or anything you like.

Tasty Portuguese ham recipes


60g (2 oz) of margarine or butter, 450g (1 lb) of thin sliced ham, 2,5 dl (8 and 1/2 oz) of milk, 3 eggs, 9 slices of bread, pepper and salt to taste.


Grease with butter a rectangular shaped pan, cover with greased paper. Beat the eggs, milk and the pepper and salt to taste. Soak the bread into this mixture. Cover the pan with slices of ham. On the bottom of the pan place slices of bread alternating with the ham until it is finished, the last must be bread pouring the leftover of the egg mixture. Cook in the oven for about 40 minutes. Unmold and decorate with lettuce, olives, hard boiled eggs, tomato etc. This is one of the traditional Portuguese Ham recipes.
