The Zimbali Lodge – the most luxurious place a person could wish for

Elvis Elvis

This is an excellent add on to the 4 Courses 7 Days tour at Garonga or Kapama or it can be a nice week all by itself.
The Zimbali Golf Course was designed by another world renowned golfer – Tom Weiskopf, winner of both the South African Open and the British Open. This is his first course to be built in South Africa though certainly not his first. His courses are legend in the United States and in Scotland. He has put together a wonderful course that is both challenging to you and sensitive to the delicate eco system of this part of the country.

The Zimbali Lodge is just about the most luxurious place a person could wish for. Surrounded by lakes, wetlands, the Indian Ocean and a wildlife reserve you may get the feeling that the big city is on another planet but it is, in fact only 42 km (26m) from Durban. Zimbali means ‘Valley of Flowers’ in the Zulu language. Among the other visitors to Zimbali, you will find beautiful butterflies, colourful insects and birds. Because of it’s proximity to the wildlife reserve, there is also a variety of animals such as antelope, monkeys, and bushbabies that like to stroll in the woodlands adjacent to the Lodge property.

The dining room, bar and livingroom are tree houses and from the balconies you reach through glass doors, you can take in the awesome views of your surroundings including the lovely 18 hole golf course. Swim in the designer swimming pool or splash around in the beautifully warm Indian Ocean which, like the lakes found in the Rockies of North America, is the most fantastic shade of blue.

The 5 star rooms are fit for royalty. They are large and beautifully outfitted to provide you with a classical atmosphere and a contemporary kind of comfort – the Victorian baths, the butler who responds to your every need and the four poster bed are part of the classical; the T.V, hairdryers, telephones and plug ins for computers would be part of the contemporary comfort.

The Golf Courses

The clubhouse is at the upper reaches of a valley – a reason to get to that 19th hole where you can sip on a cool, frosty drink and take in the awe inspiring scenery below. And look back at where you just golfed in total awe of yourself because you did it! That should be a loud hint that elevations are going to play a role in your game. Not only does the elevation change, the terrain changes. Part of the course is cut out of the forest and wetlands and part is very links-like as it used to be part of a cane plantation. While you start out on the links-styled holes, you finish in the forest. A friend from Durban and his visitor from the U.S. golfed here last week and the term they used for Zimbali is very appropriate – they said it was “au natural”. It is here where you will especially enjoy golfing from one elevation to another. The 13th hole will tickle the fancy of anyone who likes golfing downhill – very steeply downhill! Reaching the green on the 15th is quite an amazing challenge that I know you are up to – the green is hemmed in by hazards. Did I mention that some days there is a stiffish sort of coastal wind? Well I meant to.

    Mount Edgecombe

Mount Edgecombe is in a lovely little town called Umhlanga Rocks – pronounced phonetically including the h. A Part of what makes it different at Mount Edgecombe is that you have a choice of two 18 hole golf courses. Of course, if you are feeling really frisky, you could call it one 36 hole course.

The first course, which has been around since the mid 30′s was redesigned in 1991 by Hugh Baiocchi. If you are new to South Africa, keep an eye on the trees that line the fairways. They are indiginous which fits in well with the move underway in South Africa to lower the number of imported trees and encourage the regrowth local trees. The course has multi tiered greens. Water Hazards? But of course! Dam. No not swearing. The Pani Dam. The catfish in it are well fed and don’t care for golf balls.

Course number two is unique in that the grass here is entirely Royal Blue grass. It is also quite new – opened in 1997.

Lady golfers – there is a large and very active ladies golfing membership here. Active is the definitive word here and you will easily spot their influence. They will make female golfing guests feel very welcome.

    The Durban
You might wonder if this really a good golf course to spend your vacation on. Wonder no more. The Durban Golf Course is ranked 2nd in the Southern Hemisphere by Golf International. Durban Country Club has hosted 14 South African Open Championships – more than any other course. As golf course architects, Messrs. Waterman and Waters, Durban’s architects, are right up there at the top. And they have put together a course for you that you will not want to ever forget.

Again, elevation comes into play. There are many elevated tee shots here. Hole # 5 is probably the most difficult and requires the accuracy of a sharp shooter. Shoot from an elevated tee to a green that has a very narrow entrance with bunkers on either side. Hole 7 – ok Now you have the accuracy thing down to a science or you should have after Hole 5. Here, tall trees line the fairway making it narrow and demanding all the accuracy you can muster. The green you are aiming for has a bunker either side acting as sentinel. Gee! Did I forget about the wind again? Well when it comes, it is most likely a northwester and while you may not notice it on the fairway which is deep and between bunkers, your ball will once it gets airborne.
