Top adventure sites in Puerto Rico – Cathedral Cavern

Elvis Elvis

It was only in 1981 that spelunker Héctor Hernández discovered what would be known as Cathedral Cave in the Camuy River Cave Park.

This impressive feat was doubly celebrated, since a considerable number of paintings by the indigenous Taíno Indians were found on some of its walls.

The images have captured the imagination of visitors and archaeologists, as varying theories have been proposed seeking to explain their meaning and contents.

See them for yourself and you might recognize fertility icons or simply representations of the local flora and fauna. Your guess is as good as any!

As in other areas of the Cave Park, in the Cathedral Cave you can go rappelling to depths of 80 to 125 feet. Some natural galleries and pathways are illuminated by sunlight, but look out for the bat colony that still lives within the huge walls.
