Athletes make a determination to succeed in martial arts guided along the way by teachers of varying experience levels whom play an important role and whom without progressive goals would not come to fruition. An experienced teacher is responsible for the overall standard of the art and it is therefore agreed that the hard work that goes in to shaping an athlete is attributable to the teacher for their consistent demand to strive for improvement and not to yield to mediocrity and the teacher who is never short of motivational excerpts that drive us over the point of no return.

In terms of responsibility the teacher adopts a dubious approach towards the athlete as they become entranced by the smallest of movements performed by the athlete a puzzled look on their face as they search for ways to improve and make reason for non conformity. Teachers are the epitome of martial arts without further dialogue we have come to the conclusion that their advice and guidance will ensure a well thought out and executed technique is the difference between winning and losing.

  • Isolation;
  • Application.

Biomechanics has established itself as an integral component in the sporting fraternity as teachers concede to the idea that biomechanical processes are essential to developing high end products that can be marketed commercially and globally.

What are the application of biomechanics to martial arts?

Commercialisation of sports places a high demand on athletes to perform well in excess of their capabilities with success and some without the results of which become evident during ensuing years.

This is an area that is relatively new in the martial skills of athletes and one that is being embraced with vigour as athletes realise they compromise speed and delivery for power, corporate identities have taken the initiative and established well funded clinics that cater for high performance development and subsequent exposure to the many codes of sport. Martial arts is a dichotomy in terms of origin, teachers developed movements based loosely on animal behaviour yet there was no fundamental reasoning why man was able to manipulate these movements to suit human application nor do they explain the full impact of mimicking nature to protect oneself from harm. Biomechanics is an evolutionary leap towards internal harnessed potential enabling athletes a greater degree of understanding and acknowledgement to maximise the principles of physics through perseverance and determination. Athletes who are motivated towards a definitive goal will give serious thought to biomechanics as a way to overcome the physiological changes that occur during competition “natural athletes are not necessarily born” but have a unique ability to develop an intuitive style of biomechanics thus one athlete easily rivals their competition.(Master R. Athletes have been using biomechanics in a large part of their training as assistant’s, teachers commonly referred to as experience, improving the technical application of another athlete requires minimal study as the athlete has already formed a picture of problematic areas that contribute to a non effective strike. Personal experience is the leading factor that determines experience level this is a direct result of having the same process applied when the athlete first began their own training.

Competition training either technical or free-form relies not only on arduous training but sound advice and guidance capitulated with a sense of reservation sprinkled with desire. Approach your teacher and ask them for their advice but don’t be surprised when they give an instantaneous dialogue of instructions as they turn to the next athlete and expect that you will at least follow some of their instructions to the letter.
