Breed Characteristics: Despite their small size, averaging 12-15 pounds and standing only 10-12 inches high, the Lhasa Apso has an incredible amount of energy and can almost always keep up with the big dogs. This breed is one of the most hardy of the small breeds and makes an excellent companion or family pet, as they are almost always happy and vibrant animals. Because of their size, they are also easy to take almost anywhere. Keep in mind that because they do have so much energy, they will need to be exercised on a regular basis, although many of their exercise needs can be met indoors or in a backyard. Although they are easily trainable, they also have a knack for being a take charge dog, so can easily rule the roost if they are allowed.

One of the downfalls of the Lhasa Apso may be the grooming, as they have long white, gray, sandy and/or brown hair covering the majority of their body, as well as their tail, muzzle and ears. Many owners who only plan to keep the dog as a pet shave the body or at least trim the coat a great deal to keep from dealing with excessive tangles.
