What are your rituals to prepare for the bicycle riding season?

Elvis Elvis

We all have rituals that we go through everyday especially preceding or following an event. Considering spring is upon us I thought we should discuss getting your gear ready for the riding season. Even though we live in Florida and ride year round, spring is still our time for upkeep and maintenance.

This year our three year old will be a big part of the spring ritual since he has his own bike now. We’ll start with a good cleaning. Remove the seats and saddlebags etc. and spray down with a bike cleaner (I prefer the foaming kind). Get out some old toothbrushes and go to town! Getting all the gunk out of the gears, cables and crevasses.

Hose down, dry, lube and tighten everything. This is a blast with the little guys. Our son is fastidious to say the least so making his bike perfect is a joy for him.

Upon completion of the task we’ll stand back and admire each others work…it’s a guy thing and a ritual I hope my son continues.

The bike picnic is one my son’s favorite things about our rides together. He has a fixed menu for lunch – PB&J with apple slices.
