Why not visit Saas-Fee – “The Pearl of the Alps”

Elvis Elvis

Situated Southwest of Brig and car-free, Saas-Fee is the largest of four mountain villages in the Saas Valley. Like its neighbor Zermatt across the mountains, the ski resort village is a favorite destination for those who love to play on the snow. If you love winter sports, but don’t like huge crowds, this is the resort for you.

Known as “The Pearl of the Alps”, Saas-fee is surrounded by 13 peaks topping 14,000 feet. Sitting at the base of the towering Dom, the village is typically rural mountain Swiss in architecture and personality with plenty of sun-browned wooden chalets. However, its popularity as a ski resort has brought

  • modern hotels, B&Bs, and guest houses,
  • restaurants filled with mouth-watering delicacies,
  • sports gear shops,
  • trendy boutiques,
  • bakeries full of scrumtious Swiss pastries, and
  • shops filled with colorful, warm clothing.

Jean and I were surprised to find a sign right in the middle of the village proclaiming Saas-Fee to be the sister city of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Perfectly natural considering they are both great winter playgrounds.

Because of its southerly location, you can enjoy plenty of sunshine in Saas-Fee. The lively main street is an attractive place to shop or just and stroll along. Night owls can enjoy themselves in the many pubs, bars and discotheques. With 59 hotels and hundreds of apartments, the village boasts 7,600 beds, 55 restaurants, 13 bars, pubs and discos, and only 1600 permanent residents.

One of our favorite places to dine is the revolving restaurant at the Mittelallalin. The big windows give you a panorama of Alpine mountain splendor. While your eating you can literally watch the Alps go by. Treat yourself to diner and the sweeping view of snow-topped mountains piercing the royal blue sky. Later, visit the world’s highest ice pavillion.

Summer is a grand time in the Saas Valley. The mountains are criss-crossed with walking paths that take you into the heart of the Swiss Alps. Mountain meadows laden with wildflowers, gurgling streams of ice cold water, trees rustling in the breeze, and the clean scent of warm, mountain air are some of the treasures you will find hiking in the Saas Valley. Pack a picnic, grab a walking stick and camera, and spend days wandering amidst the splendid landscape of the Swiss Alps in summer.

Saas-Fee was presented with the first Winter Sports Diamond in Amsterdam in September 2003 as the winter sports resort in the Alps which has best maintained its environmental standards. 10 resorts in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland were nominated.

This rustic mountain resort has some of the most restrictive building and zoning regulations in Switzerland. All buildings must have a gabled roof and at least one third of the façade of a building must be built of wood so as to maintain the typical Valais style chalet.
