Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa, India

Here are some of the popular wildlife sanctuaries in Goa:

The best time of year for viewing wildlife in Goa is immediately after the monsoons, between October and January, when water levels are still high and temperatures cool enough for hiking. During the rain season – roughly late June to September – off-track transport is frequently disrupted by flooding, and the larger reserves are closed to visitors. If you plan to do any serious wildlife-spotting, bring with you a pair of sturdy waterproof shoes or boots, a set of binoculars and a good field guide.

Of the state’s main wildlife parks, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary, 56km east of Panjim harbours the most impressive scenery and diverse fauna, with the Catigao Sanctuary in south Goa coming a close second. Bondla, near Ponda in central Goa, is more a zoo than wildlife park – a depressing spectacle of small cages and enclosures – although the variety of birdlife in this area can be astonishing.

Ornithologists should also make time to take in the Salim Ali Sanctuary on Chorao Island, a short way upriver from Panjim, where mangrove swamps and mud flats teem with waders and other water birds.
